CRIME SCENES - Vandenhove exposition powered by Omeka S

CRIME SCENES. Interbelluminterieurs door de lens van de forensische fotografie. Expo vandenhove. Omeka S.

Exposition: Crime Scenes

From 20.05 until 10.07 the Vandenhove centre hosts the exposition 'CRIME SCENES. Interwar interiors through the lens of forensic photography'. The exhibition has been prepared in 2019 and 2020 in the research seminar 'Art, interior and design' of the master's program in Art History at Ghent University, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Marjan Sterckx, and in collaboration with the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities.

Virtual exposition: Omeka S

The confidential footage of crime scenes from Belgian judicial files from the 1920s and 1930s is the somewhat unusual starting point for this exhibition about interwar interiors. The sharp glass negatives and black and white photo prints, together with the detailed floor plans of the crime scenes, offer an uncensored, voyeuristic look at the interior design of modal home interiors in different layers of society.

GhentCDH (Davy Verbeke) provided support during the preparatory research phase. Several digital tools were used: an online collection was built with Omeka S, while also integrating the storytelling tool Storiiies and the AI image colorizer DeOldify. The result is the Omeka S virtual exhibition Crime Scenes: Interbelluminterieurs in België door de lens van de forensische fotografie (Dutch).

Digital literacy

This digital project and GhentCDH's support serves the strategic goal of the Faculty of Arts and Philosphy of Ghent University to foster the digital literacy of its students.
