Digitising the Humanities: Lecture: Ida Nijenhuis "Resolutions of the States General", 3 October

In the first lecture of our Digitising the Humanities: an Internationalisation at Home (I@H) Lecture Series, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Ida Nijenhuis, Senior Researcher at the Huyghens Institute for the History of The Netherlands in Amsterdam who will share her expertise on the Resolutions of the States General.

The Resolutions of the States General 1576-1630 from the period 1576-1630 have been transcribed and digitalised for historical research. These sources offer information regarding foreign affairs, state finances, warfare, legislation and jurisprudence, trade and crafts. Under Nijenhuis’s supervision new techniques such as Handwriting Recognition Techniques (HRT) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) are being applied. The advantages of the digital age are immediately apparent in the difference between the resolutions of the period 1576-1625, which have merely been scanned, and the period 1626-1630, the edition of which was ‘born digital’, offering a broad range of immediately accessible additional information.

The local commentator for this event is Dr. Annemieke Romein
